Silicone lubricants are built on polysiloxane fluids: chemically inert, stable from roughly -40°C to +200°C, and completely safe on rubber and most plastics. That makes them the default choice for door seals, O-rings, plastic-on-plastic slides, window channels and food-adjacent equipment. They repel water and don't gum up.
Silicone's inertness is also its limit. It does not displace moisture from a corroded or wet surface — it seals over whatever is there, water included. It offers little extreme-pressure protection for loaded metal contacts. And silicone films contaminate surfaces before painting or bonding: one spray near a paint line can cause fisheye defects for weeks.
For metal protection, moisture displacement and long-term corrosion prevention, mineral-oil systems dominate. An engineered mineral-oil formulation wicks under existing moisture, lifts it off the metal, and leaves an elastic film with anticorrosion and antioxidant additives that silicones simply don't carry. For electrical applications, a dielectric oil formulation both insulates and protects contact metals from galvanic attack.
