A seized bolt is a corrosion joint: iron oxide has grown between the threads until the parts locked. A penetrating oil attacks this in three ways. Its low-viscosity carrier wicks into the thread gap by capillary action; its surfactants undercut the oxide layer, breaking its bond to the base metal; and its lubricating fraction stays behind so the freed threads turn without galling.
The quality difference between formulations lives in the balance of these phases. A thin solvent penetrates fast but evaporates before it lubricates. A heavy oil lubricates but never reaches the corrosion front. Engineered penetrants hold both properties at once.
Freeing the fastener solves today's problem. The corrosion that seized it is a moisture problem, and it returns. This is why serious maintenance programs follow penetration with anticorrosion treatment: a moisture-displacing film applied to the freed joint (and every joint like it) stops the cycle. One application protects for at least 12 months.
