Rust needs three things: iron, oxygen and an electrolyte — usually water with dissolved salts. Remove any one and corrosion stops. Every rust-prevention strategy on the market is an attempt to remove one leg of this triangle, and the right choice depends on what you're protecting.
1. Barrier coatings (paint, powder, galvanizing). Excellent for surfaces that can be coated before assembly and never disturbed. Useless for threads, hinges, machined faces, cavities and anything already assembled — and once the barrier is scratched, corrosion concentrates at the wound.
2. Sacrificial protection (zinc, anodes). The standard for hulls and buried structures. Requires electrical continuity and doesn't help scattered fasteners or equipment interiors.
3. Environment control (dehumidified storage, VCI packaging). Effective inside a sealed volume; irrelevant the moment equipment works outside.
4. Moisture-displacing inhibitor films. A thin oil-based film that wicks into gaps, lifts moisture off the metal, and keeps the electrolyte from ever touching the surface. The only strategy that protects assembled, working equipment — threads, cavities, joints, cable glands — and renews with a simple re-application.
It should displace water, not trap it (spray onto a wet surface and the water beads off). It should stay elastic — films that dry hard crack and channel moisture underneath. It should be safe on surrounding materials: rubber, plastic, paint. And it should state its protection period: ours holds at least 12 months per application in normal exposure.
